Whenever a major honors show draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
